Kristian Young’s “Weareside by Side” campaign tells the remarkable story of one Sunderland family and their passion for the club. Stunning in both its cinematic style and exploration of universal themes, the campaign revives the image of football as more than just a sport. It's a religion, it's a cult... it's family.
The film flows from 1997 to 2017, taking all football fans down memory lane. From the first nostalgic image of Roker Park hanging on the wall, to the pre-match discussions of Niall Quinn between father and son, Kristian explores the parallels of change with the club's old guard and changes within family through this emotional passage of time. For our protagonist, the red and white scarf passed down the decades is a reminder of his father and their match-day tradition. Like a light that guides him through the dark, the scarf is there through “thick and thin”.
With the final cheer of the crowd ringing in our ears, and a last glimpse of the scarf, the campaign erupts with one final cinematic image of the match-day experience in all its majestic glory.
The Burning Reel team have done an amazing job with this one. We couldn’t be more proud.
